With a proud, arrogant and bearing attitude, Shih Tzu has a sweet-natured temperament. The puppy has a less difficult personality yet is less happy than most other toy breeds. Although Shih Tzu is solidly built and loves to play in the yard, he will not need more exercise than that. Shih Tzu loves comfort and attention and enjoys cuddling on laps and snuggling into soft pillows. Senior citizens find him a terrific pet. Most of the Shih Tzus are friendly with strangers, although socialization is necessary to make them develop a trusting temperament. They are also peaceful with other pets.

Shih Tzu has an aristocratic demeanor and has definite likes and dislikes. The Shih Tzu dogs nor get into trouble so often and is willing to forgive even when he goes wrong. If you depend on consistency, praise and food rewards, training a Shih Tzu will be easy. The most difficult thing is to teach a Shih Tzu to do housekeeping.

Shih Tzu temperament intelligent

When someone has a Shih Tzu and has the experience of owning such an amazing dog breed, it is important to find out how much this breed ranks in intelligence. Many of Shih Tzu owners will be disappointed to learn that it ranks low regarding intelligence. In fact, according to a specific classification, the breed ranks low among all common type of breeds. Many people will wonder how that comes in, yet they appear intelligent. The truth is that you will realize that this list is not all-inclusive. And there are reasons enough not to judge Shih Tzu using this classification.

It is crucial that the trace of the classification of Shih Tzu temperament intelligent. Back in 1994, there was a book by the name, “The Intelligence of Dogs.” This book lists the intellect of many purebred dog breeds. The criterion of ranking the aptitude of Shih Tzu was done through how these breeds learned new commands and obeyed them. Stanly Coren, the man who wrote the book, was a professor of Psychology at the University of British Colombia in Canada but did not test the breeds themselves. In the stead, Coren sent evaluation requests to the AKC and the CKC requesting the obedience judges to rank breeds by witnessing their performances.

When using command elements, strains were placed into different groups of intelligence levels. 10 of the breeds were listed under the brightest dogs. The next grouping involved Excellent Working Dogs and had breeds 11-26. The next breed had 27-39 breeds and was under the “Above Average category.” Many other groupings were done and the judges, Shih Tzu did not do well with commands and needed 80 to 100 repetitions of new commands given before following them. The breeds also only obeyed the first command, 25 percent of the total time. It should be mentioned that eight among the top 10 breeds are in Sporting, Herding or Hunting groups. For many generations, distinct and crucial breeding was done to instill certain traits in them. Dogs used to herd cattle have strong inbred traits to follow commands for their demanding task.
